AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
153 AM PST Sat Jan 24 2026

.SYNOPSIS...Clearer and more dry conditions will continue across
the area this weekend with some particularly cold mornings with
lows near freezing and freezing. Conditions will slightly warm and
moisten next week with increasing chances of wetting rain by mid
next week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...Offshore flow (E-NE winds) has been increasing
across the interior ridges overnight, especially in Lake County.
Gusts from 25 to 40 mph will continue through this morning over
the exposed ridges, especially in the eastern portion of Lake
County. Winds are expected to diminish throughout the day into
Sunday as the surface pressure gradient relaxes. Satellite imagery
depicts patchy low clouds and patchy fog along the river valleys
overnight. As of 12 AM PST, high dewpoints in the upper 30s to low
40s have been precluding tempeartures dropping to frost
conditions along the coast. However, frost remains probable,
(40-80% chance) for areas north of the bay (Arcata, McKinleyville,
Fieldbrook) as light easterlies drive dewpoints down into early
this morning. The chance for a freeze is much lower, only 10-30%.

Cold, dry air advection alongside generally gentle to moderate
offshore winds will continue to promote clear skies and cool
temperatures and tonight into Sunday. As a result, strong
radiational cooling will become probable across interior portions
of NWRN CA, with some patchy fog development across the river
valleys once again tonight. Freezing temperatures are forecast for
the interior valleys with lows in the mid 20s to low 30s. There
is a 30 to 70 percent chance of near freezing temperatures along
the coast, especially in the vicinity of Humboldt Bay.

High pressure is expected to slowly weaken and flatten Sunday
into Monday as a weak shortwave trough moves north of the area,
bringing and increasing cloudiness. The 500 mb ridge appears to
slowly build back early next week, with conditions slightly
warming up. Ensembles and WPC Cluster Analysis continue to suggest
a pattern shift as the ridging finally breaks down and an upper
level trough dig southward across the Pacific and approaches the
area by mid week. At this time, there is a 30-50% chance of
wetting rain by mid week. There are no major impacts expected with
this weather system; if precipitation does occur, it would be
more beneficial than impactful, especially after the recent dry
spell. /ZVS

&&

.AVIATION...(6Z TAFs)...Stratus has formed in the Russian River
Valley and the Eel River Valley. MVFR ceilings are possible at times
tonight at ACV, but offshore flow is likely to keep impacts brief.
Should stratus reach UKI, LIFR ceilings and visibilities are likely.
Any fog and stratus will lift shortly after sunrise. VFR conditions
with mostly clear skies are likely by late Saturday morning. JB

&&

.MARINE...Northerly winds have peaked and have started to ease
early this morning. Steep seas will gradually subside into the
weekend. Combined seas are likely to fall below 5 ft by Sunday as
winds remain light. A series of mid-period west swells fill in over
the coming days, each peaking at around 5 ft. Winds turn southerly
and start to increase early next week. NBM currently shows about a
50% chance for gale force gusts in the outer waters by Tuesday. JB
